Just a quick update for Lactnetters on two issues in the news right now:

Nestlé chairman to receive honourary degree today from the University of Alberta
--------------
Today a wide-ranging protest will take place outside the University of
Alberta's Timms Centre. Inside Nestlé's Chairman Peter
Brabeck-Lemtmathe will receive an honourary degree despite
considerable opposition directed at the University and its president
and senate, including the release of an open letter yesterday from
more than 70 organizations around the globe opposed to the move. Here
is a link to an op/ed piece appearing today by Elisabeth Sterken,
NFACT Canada, and Kirsten Goa, IBCLC and member, Breastfeeding Action
Committee of Edmonton (BACE):

Facebook v. breastfeeding - Action in New York and London
-----------------
Yesterday in New York City a group of people went to the American
Natural History Museum, the site of a massive marketing and
advertising conference held by Facebook, to ask advertisers and
marketers to tell Facebook to leave breastfeeding alone. Facebook
users sent message into the live stream of the conference and a number
of people on Twitter also pushed the word out. You read more about it
and watch a short video interview with me on the need for advertisers
and marketers to call on Facebook to stop taking down breastfeeding
images and suspending user accounts.

At the same time in London The Guardian decided to honour its promise
to put up reader-submitted breastfeeding images on its Facebook page.
The Comments is Free page put up the pictures... and Facebook took
them down. In recent days Dr. Jack Newman has also had a photo
removed.

Just a reminder to Lactnetters, there is a call for open letters from
health care professionals, associations, and organizations on the
issue - last week letters were received from the UK's largest
parenting charity, NCT, and from author Ann Sinnott. Your letters are
most welcome.
