Dear Lactnet Friends: At the Certified Kangaroo Caregiver course, there was a film shown about KC in which a nurse spoke about doing birth KC. Mothers who don't choose to breastfeed are told that the baby needs to be in KC after birth to transition. If the baby should crawl over to a breast and feed, it won't make any difference to that mother's choice not to breastfeed, even if the baby does breastfeed once or twice during the hospital stay while in KC. I loved how this concern is handled so professionally, so gently and so firmly. Isolettes are too stressful for babies; if a baby has to be in one, then it should be a situation where the benefits of separation outway the benefits. Here is the information about the film; the toolkit is not ready yet. Barbier, D., & University of Louisville University Hospital Center for Women and Infants. (2010). Jumping into Kangaroo Care.
