Rachel,

Thanks for sharing your management suggestion for the borderline preterm or small baby. I love the idea of setting the cell phone alarm!

I would like you to clarify please if you are aiming for a minimum of 8 feeds in 24 hours with this or if you are only aiming for 6. We have some babies also compromised by labor drugs or complications who may need to be awakened by mother every feeding. I usually tell them to start the next feeding 2 hours from when they have finished the previous feed IF baby has not cued to feed before then. I include any pumping or supplementing in that feeding time. I'm afraid that if I tell them 3 hours since the previous feed we may only get 6 feeds in during the 24 hour period if baby is lethargic. Or, do you parents set the alarm for 3 hours from the time they start the feeding process?

Also, what guidelines do you teach parents to gauge whether a feeding was good or not? Sometimes they overestimate how well baby is doing.
