It depends on whether baby can swallow safely or not. I am currently 
working with a baby with a trach. His was put in prophylactically before 
he had chemical therapy to destroy abnormal veins in his tongue. The 
chemicals cause tremendous tongue swelling.

One vocal cord-related reason for a tracheostomy would be if the cords 
are paralyzed closed. This would prevent breathing, but swallowing would 
be safe! Ask lots of questions, and then perhaps we can all be of more help.
