A gentle reminder that copyright-protected material means the **author** gets to decide whether or not her material is to be reproduced and published on Lactnet. To post a hand-out in full, complete with the copyright symbol, with no indication that the holder of that copyright has given such permission, leaves the undeniable impression that such permission was not sought. Lactnet goes to almost 3,000 members, and is archivable forever on the Interwebs. Others pulling up this excellent stuff, at some point in the future, may not be so accurate in indicating the source, author and condiditons for redistribution. This is no small matter for IBCLCs, whose Code of Ethics at Tenet 25 *requires* respect for intellectual property law, which includes copyright. A post alluding to the author, her materials (but not reproducing them ...), and a link to the author's site would of course pass muster under copyright law. We aren't prevented from sharing information, and clues as to where to find it. We are just put under stricter rules when the copyright symbol warns us that the **author** wants a first pass on deciding how the stuff her sweaty brow and mighty pen produced will be used and seen by others.
