I have seen a couple of kids with T cell mediated allergies and/or eosinophilic gastroenteritis who could only tolerate breastmilk but, in every case, the mother had to be on an extreme food elimination diet. I am surprised that Lacie, the little girl in the link earlier, was able to tolerate non-diet restricted breastmilk. I wonder if now, 20-ish years later, she would have been put on an elemental diet instead? This is going to show my (lack of) age, but did we have elemental formula in the early-mid 1980's? I was born the same year as Lacie (1981), so I was otherwise occupied at that time. ;) As a mom whose child reacted to food protein through breastmilk, which caused us to wean at almost 3, this topic is near and dear to my heart. In cases of extreme food allergies, there are often more questions than answers at any given time. He apparently developed multiple chemical sensitivities along with his food allergies, to the point that they had to move out of their house and into one built with things that wouldn't off-gas, etc. He was unbelievably thin and not thriving, but it was the only consistent food option. IIRC, they would try other things for short periods and he would inevitably begin to react. It's certainly not optimal as a sole food source past toddler hood (imagine the quantity one would need to feed a teenaged boy!), but it's rather miraculous when the other option is death.
