I do need 6000 IU D per day (1000 IU per 25 lbs body > weight) to maintain optimal levels. The "Vitamin D Council" is just yet another "non-profit" group, funded by two pharmaceutical companies that sell Vitamin D supplements, and based out of what appears to be a house in San Luis Obispo. (They also advertise a tanning bed system, but the funding arrangement is unclear.) Do you have a reputable source for this dose as a _maintenance_ requirement in order to avoid osteomalacia? I am also a little suspicious of the rapidly-changing targets for serum levels. I've looked for the evidence base on lifting the lower limit of "normal" all the way to 50, and it seems rather questionable for me at this point. If anyone has more information on that, I'd really like to hear it. I think there are a number of agendas at play in the Vitamin D debate, and we would do well to look very critically at the funding and underlying aims of vocal groups. Pharmaceutical companies have not exactly shown themselves to be disinterestedly promoting optimal nutrition for mothers and babies in the past, and the history of isolated synthetic vitamin supplements is not a pretty one (google the CARET trial, etc.) Lara Hopkins *********************************************** Archives: http://community.lsoft.com/archives/LACTNET.html To reach list owners: [log in to unmask] Mail all list management commands to: [log in to unmask] COMMANDS: 1.
