I have a mother with a 7 month old baby girl, full term. She has given permission to post. Breastfeeding established well and the baby has been on exclusive breastmilk for the first six months. Baby has always been a low poop baby - with a dirty nappy every two weeks to three weeks. No pain, or suggestion of discomfort when passing mustard yellow poop the mother descibes as the consistency of paint. Baby started the 'two week' poop at about 3 weeks old, and one 'Microlax enema' a lubricating gell for ease of passing, was administered once in the first few weeks. For the past two weeks, baby has been having a few spoonfullls of pureed veg, fruit, and baby custard. Still nursing on demand, and frequently, no other liquids. Baby was in pain and discomfort, and mother guessed it was consitpation. She did baby massage, cycled legs and some solid, yellow but not hard, poop emerged. Mum continued to massage and aid the poop out - again, firm and broke off, but not hard. Baby was straining and in great distress, and mother found fresh blood streaks, which she presumed was from the straining. At this point she administred a 'Microlax enema' using less than the 5ml tube and continued to massage and aid transit. All cleared through and baby returned to 'normal'. Mother has tremendous bowel problems as a small child, which was diagnosed as 'spastic bowel', although it never responded to fibre. She's worried sick, and quite badly scared by both the amount of pain, and the blood. I've reassured her that fresh blood streaks when the baby was straining so hard is probably not a problem at all, and to stop giving solids for a few weeks whilst we sort out what might be going on. She's happy to do this. The baby custard lists both ground rice and maize as a thickening agent. Mum is the Rural Outback in Australia. Baby is thriving and weight gain is good and there is an older child who has not had this problem. Any thoughts?
