Brenda and Rachel: We use SweetEase and a pacifier for our newborn pain relief. A couple of our young female lab techs are comfortable doing a heel stick with the baby at the breast. They also use heel warmers. The only time I see a baby zone out for several hours after receiving SweetEase is after a circ. I have yet to convince anyone that a circ should be performed with the mother leaning over the baby with her breast in his mouth in our procedure room while the doc does the cutting (LOL!). So we have to settle for inferior substitution. Moms seem interested when I tell them to put the baby to breast as immunizations are being done in the office and those that do tell me it works wonders - calm baby at breast (we do "shots" in the baby's thigh rather than the arm which would make it easier to nurse) vs. screaming baby on exam table.
