Dear all: I've been pretty much off Lactnet lately getting some work done. But, I saw the tail end of a commentary about risk of diabetes. There was a very interesting article in the NY Times Sunday Magazine section this week on the huge cultural shifts in diet that have occurred with the "nutrification" of foods. Having spent so long in nutritional sciences (albeit in international work) I have to heartily agree with the basic theme that you cannot really study single nutrients from a supplement and have any understanding of the complex interplay of real foods and health. While this article doesn't directly address breastfeeding, the basic theme of the article is readily applicable to the changes we have undergone in our approach to infant feeding. Its theme is that we have sacrificed the rich variety of our foods and the nutrients in our foods as our foods have become more processed, our agricultural products and livestock have become less diverse in terms of species and produced with more emphasis on profit than richness of taste and nutritional quality, and our lifestyle has changed such that we are losing the "culture" of cooking and eating together. I can't summarize the article adequately, but it is well worth a read.
