43% of Irish women breastfeeding

Ireland has one of the lowest rates of breastfeeding compared to other
Western countries. Just 43 per cent of women leaving hospital following the
birth of their child are breastfeeding, compared with rates of up to 99 per
cent in some other countries.

Speaking at a HSE conference on the issue, Dr Jack Newman, University of
Toronto, said Ireland had to challenge cultural norms which promoted
bottle-feeding ahead of breastfeeding.
