With the JACHO sentinel event regarding kernicterus, our hospital has begun routine monitoring of newborn jaundice using trancutaneous bilirubin meters. We have started including this assessment as part of the each Lactation Outpatient Clinic visit as well, and I would like to know what the current practice of other LCs is: 1. Does your outpatient lactation clinic appointment include assessing jaundice using a transcutaneous bilirubin meter? 2. If so, do you charge for this and what is the charge? Is it billed to insurance? 3. How often does an infant need to obtain a serum bilirubin level during a lactation outpatient visit - either based on visual assessment or a high transcutaneous meter reading?
