I'm sure this discussion has more merits than I can see right now but I'd like to comment on a remark made by a previous poster about the RN IBCLC. Although I am now an RN, I was not at the time I sat the exam (had no formal schooling at the time) and practiced successfully in a hospital setting for almost 10 years without an RN. I decided to get my RN to advance myself in the hospital setting and have more marketability as a health care professional. In retrospect, I'm glad I did get my RN because my recent move to another state where it's almost impossible to get a job without one would have been very difficult for me to adjust to. (Barnes and Noble certainly does not pay as well as this.) I have NEVER ever seen or heard of anyone who is RN IBCLC being assigned nursing duties unless they already were employed as a staff nurse and knew that their day would have that possibility. Even though I am trained to do things "a nurse could and would do" it is not part of my job description as a LC nor is it expected of me. I truly respect the diverse backgrounds we have come from, but one is not better than the other as preparation or working as an IBCLC and it's an insult to imply that.
