I have been following this discussion closely and do appreciate that the
"international" aspect of the credential was highlighted. I am wondering
how other professions, such as physical therapy, evolved in the beginning.
It's unlikely that on-the-job training/mentoring was available from the
start. How soon before recognised "training" began? Did they also start
with multiple pathways?

Speaking from a country with very few IBCLCs spread over a wide geographic
area I have many similar concerns to those expressed in this forum. Quality
on-going education is a huge challenge. Mentoring would be valuable, but
not really practical for us at this stage. That the exam is only the
beginning of an explosion of learning is a concept that is not always
grasped. Our clients and the profession suffer as a result.

What is "good training"? Guess I also have more questions than answers!
