Hi there! Please would you be able to give me some feed-back on this mommy's condition on her nipples? (I have her permission to post) I've posted the pics on my web-site at http://www.yridge.com/Default.aspx?tabid=2116 (these are pics of the left and right breasts) (Most of my site is still under construction) I saw this mommy a few days ago for the first time, and although I've seen thrush on nipples before, these photos don't seem to do justice to what I saw there. The problem started about 2 months ago when baby was put onto antibiotics for an ear infection. Baby then got thrush in his mouth (no nappy rash) and mom's nipples became sore. Mom and baby were given Nyastatin, which helped for baby, but moms nipples have not healed despite trying using the Nystatin continuously. Baby is now almost 5 months old and - to the mom's credit, is still only feeding from the breast - no pacifier, no solids. But she is really battling and is in a lot of pain. She has been using Pigeon Disposable breast pads and changing them frequently, but says they get soaked at night when she's asleep. She used to sleep with a nylon bra as it was more comfortable, but I've advised her only to use cotton bra or sleep without a bra (but she says she leaks all over then) The mother says her nipples are very sore - it pains - and the areola is weepy and the skin flakes off continuously. She described it as "water coming out of little sores on the skin". There are often spots of blood on the breast pads when she removes them. Her whole breast often itches terribly, although there's nothing noticeable on the actual skin there. There are no actual shooting pains in the breasts. The mother did not have vaginal thrush. Baby has just been diagnosed with thrush in the mouth again and is on Candacide. The mother has also just been given a Cortisone cream to apply. The only other nipple cream the mother has used in between is Lansinoh. The mother's diet is not very good - she does not eat any veggies or fruit. I have advised her to stay off sugar and yeast products. I have advised her to sit in the sun twice a day, to keep nipples 'dry'. I usually have a solution of 2tsp Bicarb to a cup of cooled boiled water that I suggest that Thrush mommies bathe their nipple area with, before hair-drying it on a low setting, and then apply Lansinoh very sparingly to stop any leaked milk from coming into contact with the skin again and 'feeding' the thrush, but this does not seem to be working in her case. I've given her Dr. Newman's APNO recipe for the pharmacist to make up, and I wonder about Gentian Violet - but have heard that it's not safe to use and that it's an 'old fashioned' recipe for thrush? Does anyone know about this? Do you think this is thrush or something else?? Any advice would be most welcome!
