Boy is my face red -- New Year's Eve yes but I don't even drink. I flipped through some stuff quickly for the numbers. I have studies showing between double (many studies) and 14 times (La Vecchia, Oncology, 1991;48(5) -- the risk for prostate cancer (not 35 times) with high versus non-dairy consumption -- 2.5 times the risk seeming to be about the "average" reported rate (here's one: Mettlin, Cancer 1989;64(3)). -- remember that some of the high/low dairy consuming geographic regions are also high/low dairy formula feeding, so the adult and childhood consumption may be intertwined in some findings. The high levels of estrogen in milk (human, cow, all) is one of the suggested links, while the lactose, growth hormine IGF1, the fat, and other factors are examined as well (and it's likely a multi-cause effect). That number 35? 35 times the risk is for diabetes in high formula/dairy consumption verses breastmilk/no-dairy (Drash, Ann Med 1991;23 (4)). Some more numbers: double to triple ovarian cancer for milk consumers (Mettlin, Am J Epidemiol 1990; 132(5)), double for lung and breast and unmeasured elevation for pancreas. Non-dairy "total" breastfeeders of Senegal have 1/50th our colon cancer and 1/6th our cancer overall, but dairy is likely only one component. Thanks for writing -- I'd hate to repeat that again. linda *********************************************** To temporarily stop your subscription: set lactnet nomail To start it again: set lactnet mail (or digest) To unsubscribe: unsubscribe lactnet All commands go to [log in to unmask] The LACTNET mailing list is powered by L-Soft's renowned LISTSERV(R) list management software together with L-Soft's LSMTP(R) mailer for lightning fast mail delivery.
