ILCA's 2003 conference was not taped. However, printed and DVD (CD?) copies of the syllabus are still available through ILCA. Some presenters did not follow their handouts, and a few didn't provide handouts, but I found the vast majority of the printed (or electronic) syllabus material to be interesting, informative, and enlightening. Regarding sharing tapes (CD's, books, pictures, etc) and Tenet 25: you can buy legally-produced tapes, or borrow someone else's legally-acquired tape, and/or you can loan one of the legal tapes you purchased to someone else. Someone who borrows a legally-produced tape, as from a lending library, can watch or listen to it at will. But you cannot COPY a purchased tape for someone else. Actually you can't even legally make a copy for yourself from a borrowed tape, although many people do so - this practice is rarely enforced by the copyright owner(s). The bigger issue is when someone buys or borrows a legally copyrighted work, then makes a copy for someone ELSE. Whether you give away the copy for free, or sell it, it's still illegal to make and distribute copies of copyrighted works without the express permission of the copyright holder. I'm not a lawyer, but I am an author, speaker, and photographer. I've become very aware of copyright issues because some people have illegally copied MY original works and tried to claim them as their own (that's plagiarism). I hire good lawyers when necessary to protect and enforce my copyrights. This is my right, and my livelihood. An example of Tenet 25 in practice: I don't include many pictures in my lecture handouts, because I don't always have permission to distribute (on paper) some images that I legally acquired and can legally show to an audience via a projector. The audience can see them on a screen, but won't get a copy in the handout package. Linda J.
