Hi. I have several mother who are breastfeeding and had there nipples pierced. I had one mother who had one nipple twice in the same location related to it not healing the first time, so it made the holes in that nipple very large. That breast did leak profusely from one of the larges holes, so all I did was position the baby where the baby's face was up against the hole, it worked like a finger in a dam hole. Baby nursed very well. Your mom will need very good nursing pads where she nurses or pumps. I find the moms who have the bar bell type nipple jewelry to have more leaking than the ones with ring jewelry. I never knew there was soooo many types of nipple jewelry until I did a web search, when I had my first patient with pierced nipples many years ago. She's pg again and would like to bf, but was told by her doctor that she can't breasfeed as the milk will profusely flow out the peirced holes. She plans to pump and breastmilk feed if bf can't be done. Anyone know of information regarding nipple peircing and breastfeeding?
