Researcher on the human milk component Multimeric Alpha-Lactalbumin (MAL) that has strong anti-bacterial and anti-cancer properties, Dr. Hemant K. Sabharwal states the following: "A positive outcome of our studies will significantly impact infant feeding practices worldwide as well as the knowledge to enhance the development of children's immune systems towards greater resistance against infections. Although we want to encourage breast-feeding, we may be able to develop procedures to provide protection against infections from cow's milk and infant formulas particularly in developing countries. MAL is probably just one of several new compounds that may prove to be effective and lead to the development of an entire new class of infant foodstuffs and supplements that are urgently needed in view of the emerging drug resistant bacteria worldwide." http://www.ifcp.us/Scientists-Scientists-Hemant_Sabharwal.cfm The reason why human milk research does not benefit breastfeeding. The research is for use in the making of a better infant formula or food supplements. Thought it interesting to hear this directly from the reseacher. Human milk research is beneficial to who?? Of course, this is one of the reasons why the dairy industry has such a keen interest in human milk components. Valerie W.
