I am hesitant to tell this story because I know for a fact that all sorts of people read this forum, but I just have to share. In a certain large maternity hospital in central Israel where a certain brand of artificial milk (S) is donated by a large American company ( A-R), the only IBCLC working in that hospital happened to notice that the artificial milk was about to expire any day. After bringing this to the attention of the head nurse, she assumed that all that stuff would be thrown away. But alas, the next day, there were notes posted all over the walls that the expiry date had been extended for 3 months. The LC in question looked in internet at the site of the company that produces this artificial milk and it said that the milk should be discarded immediately if it had passed the expiry date, or if it was brownish in color and had pieces floating on the top!! She looked in the bottles, and not only was it brownish, but had pieces floating on the top. However, the warning to discard immediately seems to be irrelevant if the milk is donated to a hospital!! I have since noticed that the expiry dates have been extended to over a year. Interesting that only the LC was interested in the expiry date? Esther G --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
