Jill asks, "Following the birth weight, when is the next bare weight done - day 3, 72 hours, discharge, day 5?" While it would be better record keeping to count based on birth time, for actual practical purposes, I think it doesn't work well. We weigh babies on the night shift as long as they are in the hospital. This can vary depending on when the nurse does the baby assessment. While some nurses still insist on "rounding up" all their babies to the nursery to do assessments at the nurse's convenience, most are doing it whenever it works out for mom, baby, and nurse. (This is, of course after the first few hours when assessments are done more frequently and for well babies that don't need more frequent assessment for some medical concern.) So a baby might be weighed around midnight or it might not be until almost day shift or any time between. Then there is the whole matter of when a weight is done in relation to baby's voiding and stooling. (I've discussed this previously.) So again, weights should be taken as ONE aspect of assessment, not the whole picture!
