A mum consulted me on day 7 postnatally with badly damaged nipples. I suggested changes in the baby's position and latch after which, position and latch looked great and baby fed really well. However, she still had some pain throughout the feed. That evening she developed mastitis and was prescribed antibiotics the next day. After the first dose of antibiotics the pain during the feed subsided and after a few doses she had no pain. She continued to position and latch the baby in the way I had shown her so the only difference from the time of my consultation, were the antibiotics. I feel sure that the position and latch of the baby was optimal. As the pain disappeared with antibiotics, I am wondering if the continuing pain was a sign of developing mastitis rather than the latch hadn't been corrected. I would appreciate your more experienced views please.
