Thank-you all for your great suggestions of other breastfeeding resources to
give to patients (especially all the free/low cost ones.) I'm working on a
letter encouraging breastfeeding to give out with my prenatal packet I
currently give at the first visit also, and may post it here for your
suggestions. I'm trying to plant seeds early on, then hopefully cultivate
throughout pregnancy for my own pregnant patients.
As a follow up, I saw the baby yesterday who had been sent home from another
hospital not latching, losing weight, and jaundiced. Mom had been given a
nipple shield with no instructions, had a cracked and bleeding nipple, and
had given up entirely when I met her and baby at 3 days of age. Now at 9
days, baby has had no formula in 4 days, is starting to gain well, mom's
nipple has healed, and she and baby both appear quite happy. I'm especially
happy when I can help a first-time mom like this, because hopefully she'll
go on not only to nurse this one, but any subsequent kids as well, knowing
she can be successful even with a rough start.
