Christy asks"|: <Does anyone know of any books on preparing for natual childbirth that I can recommend to my clients? > While perusing publications on aging in the health food store not long ago, I noticed a book that I have no earthly use for but to recommend and to loan to young mothers-to-be. But it seemed so well rounded and common-sense for communicating with one's birth attendants and birthing in today's obstetrical climate, and so sensitively done in regard to the psychological transitions of the mother and the couple to parenthood, that I just had to buy it! The author says that "Breastfeeding is such a complex subject, that the important details are beyond the scope of this book. For an in-depth presentation of practical information in a wonderfully illustrated book, we recommend 'Bestfeeding' by Mary Renfrew et al. (1990)" She then goes on to give just a 'nipple-full' of information about breastfeeding in 3 pages. A clever sidebar says "Don't worry! Don't supplement with formula!" with some facts about the basis of growth charts. The book is: Birthing from Within: An Extraordinary guide to Childbirth Preparation" Pam England CNM, MA and Rob Horowitz, PhD, 1998, published by Partera Press P.O.Box 4528 Albuquerque, New Mexico 87106 I don't know if it was ever reviewed in JHL, but if it wasn't, I think it should be, unless 4 years old, is too old for a book to be reviewed. I think it's a gem. Jean K.
