Magda Sachs wrote about hesitating to post to Lactnet her rapid reply to the BMJ editorial about the study on the WHO code in Togo and Burkina Faso, feeling "that most lactnetters are uninterested in issues to do with ethics, the Code, international instruments..." I, for one, am glad you posted, Magda. After all, anyone who is an IBCLC must abide by its principles of ethical practice which include requirements to: 22. "Accept the obligation to protect society and the profession by upholding the Code of Ethics for International Board Certified Lactation Consultants and by reporting alleged violations of the Code through the defined review process of the IBLCE." 24. "Adhere to those provisions of the International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes which pertain to health workers." IBCLCs who are uninterested in ethical issues, are unfamiliar with their own Code of Ethics, and/or are unfamiliar with the International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes will be unable to meet the ethical requirements of their profession. It would be interesting to know what proportion of Lactnet subscribers are IBCLCs. I would be surprised if it is not substantial. If I'm correct, then issues of ethics, the Code, etc. are automatically relevant to the work of many Lactnet subscribers. And regardless of the initials behind a name, I've found that such issues are important to just about everyone I personally know who is engaged in paid and/or volunteer work in the field of breastfeeding and human lactation. So, thanks for posting your wonderful response to the BMJ editorial!
