Hi Corrine, I have been nomail awhile, but signed on again. Will see if I can keep up for awhile. Re the lady w/ the 5 mo old and low milk supply: I don't think it is the heparin. I always say "look for horses, not zebras first." Which is to say, go for the obvious. You seem to have pinpointed it w/ the early return to work, stressful move, early intro of solids etc. I think this lady could benefit from a good LC who could, together w/ the mom, lay out a plan for returning to bf. She probably would benefit from any or all of the following: cosleeping, babywearing, top grade double electric pump, galactagogues, changing her work hours if possible to spend more time w/ baby or taking a short vacation (babymoon), stopping pacifiers if used, cutting back on solids, using a cup for drinking instead of bottle, maybe a nipple shield but probably not due to baby's age, maybe a nursing supplementer (like SNS or Lactaid or homemade one) if baby will latch and nurse briefly. Also get the thrush treated, if it is thrush. Also this mom needs a mother to mother support group whcih could help tremendously with the return to bf, and show her another way to later introduce solids instead of the commercial baby food method. p.s. I passed my 10 yr recertification exam w/ a 93! I am so proud. Laurie Wheeler, IBCLC, MN, RN New Orleans Louisiana, s.e.
