andrea, i am not sure why you feel so angered at recent posts. i think many of us have been in your shoes (i know many who have), having to use formula in lieu of breastfeeding. i think what i am getting from the other posts is that formula is not really very different from what i was raised on 'condensed milk and karo syrup'. the formula marketers want us to believe it is just about like breastmilk but it isn't. they also market formula for lactose intolerance, spitty babies, etc, it seems anything they can think of to create yet another market niche. i saw lot of this addressed on your site so i know you see this for what it is. it is the formula marketing that is evil and the misinformation that leads us to feel we have to use it when we really don't, like being told incorrectly to wean due to a medicine or jaundice. i don't think anyone is disputing that a baby must be fed milk when his mom is unable to bf him. (obviously you did, but was 'formula' exactly necessary or could a homemade milk have been basically the same? rhetorical question, don't take this personally) also i think what others were trying to say is that human milk is so far superior (we know that) but formula/cows milk/goats milk/various modifications are all very very similar to each other, being far apart from breastmilk. being a nurse and working in a hospital setting i wouldn't dare tell a mom to feed her baby cows milk/karo syrup if we needed a supplement, but really i believe similac (or other) wouldn't make a difference in baby's health over the cowmilk/karo. and i would try to get bf back asap, as i know you did. i'm not sure i'm makeing myself clear. the formula marketers want us to believe their product is super duper and close to breastmilk, they want us to defend it, and they want us to pay alot for it. p.s. i used it very cavalierly 13 yrs ago (again, not your situation) with my first child, believing most of the marketing and taking home freebies and it led to premature weaning.
