The post said that this baby is now due day and weighs 3.8kgs ,so even if this baby was still in hospital -special care nursery. We would treat it as a term baby and encourage all breast feeds when mum was available and suck feeds with EBM no additives for other feeds. This baby would only still be in our nursery if he/she had chronic problems related to lungs, etc otherwise would have been discharged when reached 2.2-2.5kgs plus as long no feeding problems existed fully breastfeeding as this is our aim for our breastfeeding mums. We often find that the peds/neos in NICU are so focused on what to do for the premmie or near-term babies that they forget that once a baby reaches 36wks plus ,considered term and is able to suck at breast ,putting on weight they no longer need extra calories added to their feeding regime like the underweight premmie. This might be the problem here, the peds don't see this baby as being a healthy term baby now that can breastfeed as nature intended him/her to do.
