Regarding TSH levels- Speaking as one of the many who are on thyroid medicine for hypothyroidism: Elevated Thyroid Stimulating Hormone levels are produced by the antr pituitary (same place prolactin is made) when there is insufficient circulating thyroid hormone and therefore TSH is upped in an effort to get the thyroid to make more thyroid hormone. The goal is to keep the TSH levels low by having enough thyroid (T3,T4) hormone (either from one's thyroid gland or levoxyl or another equivalent drug)--and TSH levels serve as an earlier indicator of insufficiency (since the thyroid might be able to work in overdrive & keep the T3, T4 levels adequate). As I understand it, it's not the TSH level that directly affects breast milk production, but rather the thyroid levels themselves. So I think that the normal low levels of TSH are what both that cancer patient (cancer of what, though??) & the lactating mother want... Anyone else care to try to make this clearer?
