Check the archives I have a pre-op fasting handout with references ect. I t was probably published around Dec '99. Chris Betzold NP IBCLC Dear All, I had a question put to me this week about surgery in breastfeeding infants. Basically, here in the Netherlands an anaesthetist is going to give a one hour talk on breastfeeding and surgery in infants to a group of lactation consultants and is looking for more info on the subject. Unfortunately we do not have much information (actually any) about this situation in our reference collection on bfeeding, so I was wondering whether any of you out there can give some good references / information sources? I have checked Lawrence and also Jack Newman's books, and exellent as they are, the information regarding protocols for pre / post-operative fasting in breastfed surgical patients is not a great deal. From Dr Newmans' book I understand that The Boston Childrens Hospital and Philadelphia childrens hospitals have specific protocols for bf and surgery (pre-op fasting of 3 hours). Thus, does anyone out there have more specific information on this topic that can be used for such a talk? I have searched the archives of lacnet and medline, and it seems to me that there is not very much specific information about surgery / anaesthesia in the breastfed infant (gastric emptying times / fasting protocols etc). I hope someone can be more enlightening. yours Sara Bernard The Netherlands (biologist, bf counsellor, mother of 2 plus??) *********************************************** The LACTNET mailing list is powered by L-Soft's renowned LISTSERV(R) list management software together with L-Soft's LSMTP(TM) mailer for lightning fast mail delivery.
