Teresa, I have also noticed that some prems find it difficult to transition from bottle to breast. They seem to forget that they must draw the breast into their mouth themselves. They open wide, then wait and do nothing else. I get the impression that they are waiting to feel something - the bottle teat - in their mouth, forgetting that they have to do this bit. We do not give bottles to the prems who are going to breastfeed, cupfeed when Mums are not around. Also the mothers get used to holding their baby in the bottle feeding position if this is what they learn first. I thought that Sandra Lang's data when she worked at Exeter in the UK showed that breastfed prems went home earlier than bottle fed babies. Anyway, if babies are going to breastfeed why give them a bottle at all? What is the rationale for this? Based on what research?
