Claudia I hope you don't think you are not capable of helping the moms now. Please keep on helping them, studying, and learning with us and we will be happy to have you among our ibclc ranks in the future. I will be ready for my 10 yr recertification next year, however, I continue to learn everyday and confer/refer when I need help. Regarding the mom with hair loss and weight loss, I would think to have her thyroid function checked by her MD. Also some hair loss can be normal postpartum (whether bf or not) and depending on the mom's size, eating habits she may be so busy nursing and not feeding herself well. I myself weigh about 100 pounds and when nursing in the peak months (before solids) would go down to 89 pounds. I am not anorexic but just didn't take the time to always eat. If someone would set the food in front of me believe me I would eat! Laurie Wheeler, RN, MN, IBCLC Violet Louisiana, s.e.
