I have on occasion said to a mom who I perceive to be receptive to
non-traditional treatments that I have heard such and such an herbal
may be effective. At the same time, I tell her that I am not an
expert on the subject. We have a local private practice LC who
frequently suggests herbal and homeopathic approaches and on a
couple of occasions I have referred moms to her when I felt she
might benefit from and be receptive to such an approach.
On the other hand, we do frequently suggest More Milk and More Milk
Plus (more so than fenugreek alone) which is, of course, herbal, now
that it is available locally. I tell a mom that herbal remedies are
controversial with many docs and that I can't tell her how they work
or even if it will in her case, but that we have heard very positive
reports from moms that have found it helpful. I think this covers
my you-know-what. It is given as a suggestion without any
guarantees and I don't think it could be considered "prescribing".
