Cindy et al, It's great that the doc recognized that mom's IV fluids can influence baby's birth weight. However, I think we have to be careful about simply stating that the diaper output would be a better measure than weight gain. This is true only of the stools, not necessarily the urine. Urine output would be expected to be high because baby is "dumping" the extra fluid, not necessarily because it is recieving adequate intake. This goes back to an earlier thought I had. What if we used the 24 hour weight as the basis for future comparisons rather than the birthweight? Meconium also "artificially" adds to birthweight and by 24 hours, at least some of that would be gone (especially if baby is nursing well.).
