I am needing some advice on talking to a group of peds who have in the
past referred several moms/babies per month to me in my private practice
but have not referred any in about 6 months. When I look back, I haven't
received any "complaints" from them or their patients and there were some
really good outcomes. I know this group is not very pro-breastfeeding
from comments I hear from mothers and nurses in the hospitals. They worry
about mom not getting rest because she is breastfeeding (and don't
realize we LC's worry about that too and try to help them find a way to
rest and breastfeed) and if baby is hungry "stick a bottle in his mouth".
I basically have no competition as there are no other lactation
consultants for 30-40 miles. I think the MD's may not think it's worth
getting a consult so they just stopped referring - and the men in this
group are a little arrogant. I always fax a report within 24 hours to the
MD and I ask the moms that if I have helped them to please tell the MD.

I plan on meeting with them soon, probably one at a time. This paranoid
thing inside of me keeps creeping up wondering what I "have done" to
cause this and is making me procrastinate on handling the situation. I
would always appreciate the MD calling me if he/she didn't think I
handled a case appropriately.

I sure some of you wise ones have encountered this situation and I need
your help, please. If this has been discussed on Lactnet, I would
appreciate some key words to use.
Thank you very much,
Kris Wiedman RN IBCLC
