In Texas there was an attempt to look at reimbursement for lactation
consultants and a bill was proposed and even a hearing was held to some
legislative body at the state level. The come back was..... that in order to
require reimbursement by insurance and medicaid, lactation consultants would
need to be license by the state. That would mean a bill to define lincensure
requirements such as an (IBCLC) being the standard. They would pay a
licensing fee to cover expenses of such an entity at the state level. It was
even speculated that the state agency that licenses dieticians, etc. perhaps
could add lactation consultants. The point being is that reimbursement is
only made to persons with a license at this point.....so get the LC licensed,
then come back and ask for a bill for reimbursement. This could still be
years down the road on such an endeavor.
