Dear friends,
Several years ago I attended a conference at which I had heard that the IV
fluids that a mom receives during labor may impact a baby's birth weight.
Do any of you have information that supports this or was it anecdotal? The
concern that I have has to do with increased fluid in the baby leading to
very dilute first void resulting in possible questionable UDS results. I
have witnessed fluid retention in areolar tissue which obviously impacts
breastfeeding. The concern that I have regarding increased fluid in the
baby has to do with mom having a +UDS but baby having a -UDS. In the past,
when a mom is "+" she has had to pump and dump until confirmation of the
UDS is done and/or until she has a "-" screen. We are in the process of
reviewing our policies and procedures so I would appreciate any input you
may have.
