Just got a note from someone signed up for one of our cram courses written on
a piece of scratch paper from Ross Labs. I wonder if she even THOUGHT about
what she was using. Probably not. I think it takes time for health care
professionals to become sensitized to this issue. I doubt there is a person
who regularly reads Lactnet that ISN'T sensitized, and would use a paper
towel to write a note before picking up something that screams SIMILAC. But
it does take time -- and we can hope to get through to them little by little.
I'm including some of this information and hopefully instilling a bit of
understanding into the students in our courses both in our talks on ethics,
and in our talks on history of the profession. My favorite visual aid is the
current MJ diaper bag that is labeled "Breastfeeding Success Bag." Folks are
absolutely astonished at what you need to breastfeed successfully. Me too --
I foolishly thought you needed a breast and a baby. Apparently not. If you
get a chance, go through it and laugh -- or weep, as the case may be.
