Donna
This lady could certainly benefit from a second opinion, and may have time
to seek one, if the other doctor is planning to wait one month anyway.
Perhaps she can find someone with experience on lactating breasts.
The mother's abdomen can be shielded during the mammogram, I beleive, so she
could have that done. Why was a sonogram done in the first place? What led
her to seek care that led to that diagnostic test. It seems atypical that
she would have cancer bilaterally and presenting with a mass on one side and
a nipple discharge on the other, but nothing is impossible. Maybe she has
very cystic breasts or something like that. Could the cells from her nipple
discharge be examined, would that tell pathology anything? Would it be
better to have one or all of these tests prior to delivery? The biopsy site
then could have had some time to heal. Again, I think a practitioner more
experienced with pregnant and lactating breasts would be helpful here.
I'm not sure what I would advise this lady, except that she and her baby
have every right to breastfeed, and she has a right to find a practitioner
that is willing to enable her to do that, while still finding out if she has
anything serious. I don't believe that any of the tests they are
recommending would preclude bf. And every client should have all options /
alternatives thoroughly discussed so as to be able to make an informed
decision.
