I have a dear friend who is a staunch vegan but who opted to include other
foods while pregnant and breastfeeding. Her thought was that other mammals
change their diets somewhat when pg and nursing apparently to be sure they
get the extra nutrition needed for this "high need" stage of their lives.
She changed gradually early in her pregnancy and now that baby is nearing a
year, she has been gradually returning to a totally vegan diet. Don't know
if others are willing to make these changes on a temporary basis, but it
makes sense to me. Eating a vegan diet when we don't live close to the land
can be a real challenge!

Winnie
