Hello, Lisa.
I don't know about upper limit, scientifically. But a mother I have
worked with twice so far (she just had her third two days ago, so I am
interested to see what happens this time) has had *plenty* of milk each time. With
her second baby, when the milk came in, she produced 60 ounces/day *beyond* what
her baby needed. (No, that's not a typo--she really produced 60 extra
ounces.) Baby was just miserable, and we could not downregulate her supply with the
tricks I knew at the time, so she pumped and bottle-fed baby, which kept his
digestive tract much happier. By the time he was 4 months old, she was "down"
to producing 14 oz/day more than her baby needed.
I have learned quite a few more techniques for possibly reducing
supply from all you folks on Lactnet. I am curious to see if she overproduces to
the same extent this time around. If so, I plan to offer some of the
suggestions I've learned here!
