I have been at the March of Dimes Conference in Chicago the last couple of days
and picked up a copy of the brand new book for b/f mothers published by R-ss
Pedia-rics. " A Guide for the Breastfeeding Mother". Has anyone else seen this
book? It's brand new, authored by 3 IBCLC nurses and a DNSc/RN/FAAN. I have
skim read all 47 pages and I have to say if I was looking at it as a regular/
get 'em going/ encourage 'em breastfeeding information book I would have a hard
time finding fault with it! There is not one picture of a bottle or bottle
feeding, not in one single place is mother tempted to even think that ABM might
be the answer, artificial nipples and bottles are really discoraged, the tone is
very positive "you can do it". If all the suggestions don't work mother is
often refered to her LLLL or IBCLC/LC or HCP. The pictures are good,
informationwise and feature mothers from diverse ethnic backgrounds. In many
places mothers are warned NOT to give a bottle, only feed expressed breast milk
even then told to use alternative feeding methods of cups syringes suplementers
etc., Unless I am REALLY missing something I have to say that I am almost
finding it hard to believe that it's published by an ABM company. The only R-ss
type thing in the whole book is a couple of pictures of the R-ss teddy bear.
The book is written to be a part of the new R-ss Breastfeeding Pack free give
away to b/f mothers (a cooler case with cooler packs a bottle and yes,a can of
ABM) I can't wait to hear what the rest of you think about this book. I must
confess that when I started reading it, I began with a bias and even had a
marker in my hand, ready to "highlight" the subtle undermining messages that
have been quite prevalent in previous ABM published literature on the
breastfeeding topic. I can't wait to hear what you all think. I have to
confess, I even told the R-ss Rep today, I thought the book was good!- will you
still let me be on Lactnet for that?
Interested to know what your views are. What am I missing? I've been a sceptic
for the 20 years I've been an LLLL!
