Yes, you're very right, I think.
What I see is mostly moms who breastfeed mainly as a means of infantfeeding, meaning they feed a certain amounts of feedings a day from start on. they do not practice much of mom/baby togetherness (use cribs, playpens and car-seat-carriers). They manage to keep up production with some hocuspocus every now and then, and they may encounter problems when even skipping a single feeding. When they get pregnant they loose their milk almost immediately. I do know babies, however, who despite of the low milk production do keep on nursing up till and beyond the birth of the sibbling.

Normal? yes, universal? No I have known many women who have breastfed
through pregnancy and beyond, some of whom continued for a time to
exlusively breastfeed with no apparent ill-effects for the suckling.
This is one of those very individual things, I think. It is wise to avoid
generalisations that can undermine mothers' confidence in their bodies. It
is also wise to teach them how to be absolutely sure their babies are
getting sufficient milk (and this does not involve the use of a scale) and
when they might need to seek help.
