I have reviewed a sample jaundice booklet, in which it is written that breast
milk may interfere with the liver's ability to break down bilirubin, making
jaundice last longer, and for which we may need to stop breastfeeding for 48
hrs if instructed by our MD. This is under a heading "how breast-feeding
affects jaundice." It's not till we turn the page that we see "don't stop breast-
feeding without first checking with your doctor," and further encouragement to
breastfeed, or express. These are statements related to newborn jaundice,
not other types of jaundice also described...pathological and obstructive. This
contradicts the AAP statements on jaundice. Unless we witness these things,
they may go undetected and unreported. Judy
