REGARDING BF and Vit K deficiency

Dear Lactnetters,

Senario: a 7-month-old boy takes an antibiotic because of an ear infection and
starts vomiting repeatedly and having diarrhea two days into the treatment.
When the antibiotic is discontinued, the vomiting ceases but the diarrhea
continues.

Three days after taking him off the antibiotic, pinpricks bruises develop on
his body, which grow and become raised. Blood test reveal vitamin K deficiency
and the doctor blames it on breastfeeding (even though standard medical books
state that antibiotics can cause Vit K deficiency).

Do you have references regarding vit K deficiency rates in breastfed compared
to artificially fed children? Have any of you encountered a situation such as
this one?

TIA,

Nicole Bernshaw
