I have permission to post from a mother of a 2-month-old. She has
exclusively breastfed (with some pumping) from birth with equal stimulation
to both breasts. Breasts look identical but one breast is making no more
than drops of milk. She is supporting her infant on the functioning breast
with perhaps 4 oz formula daily. She was referred to me by her pcp just in
case this unilateral production indicated some pathology in the
non-functioning breast.

After much discussion the only issue that has come up is this: when this
mother was 14 her non-functioning breast became extremely hard and very
painful. She was diagnosed with mastitis. She does not recall any more
than that. She does recall her breasts being fully developed at age 14.

Is it possible that severe mastitis during adolescence could somehow render
a breast non-functional?
