For those of us who strongly believe that surgery is NOT the preferred way

1) NIH PANEL FINDS EVIDENCE INSUFFICIENT TO RECOMMEND FOR OR AGAINST
MATERNAL-REQUEST C-SECTION Following a two-day conference open to maternal-child
health professionals, the public and the press, an independent panel convened by
the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has released a statement that “the
available information comparing the risks and benefits of cesarean delivery on
maternal request (CDMR) versus planned vaginal birth do not provide the basis
for a recommendation in either direction.” The panel cited insufficient
research evidence to recommend either for or against cesarean surgery on the
request of a mother. They recommended individualized counseling for each woman
requesting CDMR regarding risks and benefits of both vaginal and c-section
delivery and they urged providers to consider such factors as societal and
cultural conventions, ethical issues, available resources and other factors
pertaining to the individual when counseling a patient. The panel also made a
variety of recommendations for future research. For the full text of the panel’s
State-of-t he-Science statement, go to _http://consensus.nih.gov_
(http://consensus.nih.gov) . Archived videocasts of the conference are available at
