Fellow breastfeeding advocates,
I had an interesting weekend at a Baby Event in my state. I was a speaker
and an exhibitor at a baby fair. Somehow (maybe God's providence but at the
time it did not feel like it) I was right next to the MJ booth. I was
actually physically ill most of the day. Just watching women and men stand
in line for quite a while just to get two small cans of fake human milk and
sign up to get more marketing thrown at them made my heart sick. To watch
(this was sponsored by a hospital) nurse after nurse come up to the formula
rep and interact with him like an old pal - calling each other by name,
exchanging jokes and calling the product "baby milk" made me want to scream.
This is a hospital that sponsored a large breastfeeding 1 day conference
about 1 and a half years ago that was EXCELLENT, employes LCs and I am sure
considers themselves supportive of breastfeeding. I was so sick and just
kept thinking about the WHO code all day and night. I just wanted to cry.

I will be letting them know about the code, how it is being violated and why
that hurts moms. I will be glad to come back but I will express my
professional opinion. I do not desire to burn bridges but I will not
compromise my professional ethics.

Secondly please please tell me how I can get involved with trying to make
the code inforced in the United States. Why this all powerful country can't
inforce this policy makes no sense. If we truely care about the health of
our youngest citizens this has GOT to change. More than WIC changing , more
than anything else, women have to stop being bombarded with marketing and
bad labeling at every turn. I need to know how to become involved with those
trying to get legislation or codes or whatever passed and changed.

I have always been bothered by formula companies at baby fairs but for some
reason this really got to me this weekend. It also bothered me to see the
Fischer Price toys at their booth. I am thinking about boycotting them.

thank you for your listening and helping,

Micky Jones
