Greetings,
I wanted to share something with all of you that will make you
realize just how much work there is to do in regards to breastfeeding
education. I work in a Level III NICU that supposedly supports
breastfeeding. We use little 60 ml plastic bottles for pouring human milk
feedings as well as artificial milk feedings, when babies are being bottle
fed. In the past, they had been supplied by a company that manufactures
artificial baby milk. We recently stopped purchasing from that company and
started to purchase them from a company that supports breastfeeding. The
charge is significantly less and the new bottles offer advantages such as
sterility and lids. I was pleasantly surprised to see slogans on the
bottles which support breastfeeding. I thought it was about time that we
advertised breastfeeding instead of advertising artificial baby milk
companies with crib cards, diaper bags, etc. Well, here is a letter I
received from one of the staff nurses; it is really discouraging.

I was using the new feeders that have replaced the Gradu-feeders to feed
the babies and noticed that the bottles all carry different messages related
to breast feeding : i.e.....
"Contents; 100% Breast milk"
"Mother's milk is #1"
"Breast feeding is nature's perfect food"
"Breast feeding from mother with love"
"Breast feeding best feeding"
These bottles are also being used for formula fed babies and their Mothers
who have made the choice not to Breast feed . It just doesn't seem very
supportive or appropriate to have these easily read "logos" for our
Bottle-feeding population. Is there a different way we can meet the needs
of both of these populations without seeming judgmental ?
