This may be a bit off topic; if so I apologize.

This semester I am finishing my course-work to become a nurse
practitioner at Florida State University. My thesis topic (already
defended Dec 03 2002!) is "Breastfeeding Policies and Practices on
Perinatal Units of Florida Hospitals".

In addition, I am starting the course-work to complete my post-masters
educator certificate. This semester I am in the Teaching I course, in
which I am expected to develop a course. I have already gotten
clearance to develop a one- to two-hour elective on breastfeeding. (I
don't know whether it would actually get implemented-- but I have to
develop a course nevertheless.)

The principle question I have is this: If you had the freedom to
develop, from the ground up, an elective course directed toward
baccalaureate level nursing students on the topic of breastfeeding, what
content would you want to see included in it?

What text would you like to see utilized?

My vision is to have a class that baccalaureate-level nursing students
who had an interest in maternal/child nursing could take in order to
expand their knowledge base both related to breastfeeding and to care of
the mother/baby dyad. Breastfeeding is at least briefly discussed, as
far as I know, in the lecture segment of the Childbearing/Child-rearing
family course but due to the breadth of information the course covers,
the amount of time devoted to breastfeeding has virtualy got to be
superficial at best. While we do not attempt to "specialize" our
nursing students, they do for the most part get a feel for areas that do
or do not interest them as they progress through their clinical
rotations. I would like to provide opportunity for students who are
interested in working in the labor & delivery and/or postpartum areas to
increase their competency level and knowledge base.

Any feedback appreciated... and if this is not of general interest to the
list at large, private responses are welcomed. Thank you!!
